The Virtues

Virtues

The term Virtue refers to the moral system of Ultima Online and to a game mechanic that grants bonuses for performing certain actions.

There are eight components of the virtue paradigm: Compassion, Honesty, Honor, Humility, Justice, Sacrifice, Spirituality, and Valor. The game mechanic is accessed via the Virtue Gump. The philosophy behind the Virtues is opposed by the philosophy of Chaos; the individual virtues are opposed by a sin that is its opposite.

Most often, Virtue refers to the in-game system wherein players can perform certain actions based on or related to the Virtues, and achieve certain in-game powers. Only five of the eight virtues currently are active.

In the 2D client, the system is accessed by double-clicking the symbol at the very top of a character's paperdoll.

Active Virtues

* Compassion: A Heart (NPC escort quests / resurrect others with up to full health)
* Spirituality: An Ankh (Performing tasks that depend on other virtues / ressurect with up to full health)
* Justice: A Set of Scales (Killing reds / increased power scrolls amounts)
* Sacrifice: A Teardrop (Sacrificing fame / self resurrection)
* Valor: A Sword (Kill champion spawn monsters / ability to activate and advance champion spawns)

Compassion:

Defined as the quality of having nonjudgmental empathy for one's fellow creatures.

The Virtue Compassion

The Virtue Compassion is but one of eight virtues found in the Virtue System. It is represented on the Virtue Gump as a heart.

The Virtue of Compassion allows a character to resurrect others with more than one hitpoint, as with normal resurrections. The benefits of Compassion are well worth the effort in gaining the ability, as it helps prevent rez-killings from both players and monsters. It also gets the resurrected person back into the action faster and conserves the mana/bandages/time healing them back up to full hit points.

Gaining Compassion

Gaining in the Virtue of Compassion is accomplished by escorting NPCs or Prisoners to their requested destination. This is done either via Gate Travel or simply walking and will reward you with 500 gold and progress towards achieving a level of Compassion. Rescuing Prisoners from NPC brigand camps, orcs, lizardmen, etc. will reward you with more progress (roughly double) than NPC's escorted from towns.

At each completed level of Compassion, the Virtue icon will fill-in with a darker color and the title will change to indicate your current level of achievement when you mouse-over the Virtue icon from the main Virtue menu. Your level of achievement in each Virtue is publicly viewable by other players if they double-click the Virtue menu in your paperdoll.

At each level of Compassion, people resurrected by you will return to life with additional hit points (without Compassion, they resurrect with just one hit point). Resurrections by either the Magery spell of Resurrection or from bandages with the Healing skill will add the additional hit points.

Justice:

Justice is one of the virtues for which there is a game mechanic. The only way to earn Justice is through PVP combat by killing murderers. Justice is expended at Champion Spawns to increase the number of Power Scrolls that are awarded.

Gaining Justice

Justice is awarded to the person who delivers the killing blow to a murderer, or red, character in Felucca. There is a timeframe of 7 minutes between being able to receive Justice again from a single target. This is to prevent people from "farming" Justice by continuously res-killing a red.

The amount of Justice gained from each kill varies with the amount of skill points of the killed character and the level of Justice their killer is currently at. After each kill, a message stating "You have gained in Justice" will be displayed.

Expending Justice

Justice allows you to "protect" another player in Felucca. While one is under the protection of another, the protector has a chance of receiving a Scroll of Power when the recipient receives one. The chance of receiving a "protection scroll" depends on your Justice level.

* Seeker of Justice: 60% chance of scroll
* Follower of Justice: 80% chance of scroll
* Knight of Justice: 100% chance of scroll

It is a common misconception that the protection scroll will be a duplicate of the recipient's scroll, at least in intensity if not the covered skill. This is not the case. The scroll received by the protector is random.

Valor:

Virtue

It is the Virtue that enables characters to start a Champion Spawn. When the third level, or Knight of Valor, is reached, the character can invoke the virtue and target a Champion Spawn altar, thus activating it.

Valor is obtained by killing creatures in a Champion Spawn. One random Fellucan spawn will activate upon server-up so valor may be obtained to start the rest of the altars.

Valor can only be gained at Ilshenar Champion Spawns.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Sacrifice:

Sacrifice is a virtue that is gained through sacrificing one's fame to a monster in order to redeem it. The monster will then recognize it's wrong-doing and vanish into thin air. The monsters you can sacrifice to include Demons, Enslaved Gargoyles, Evil Mages, Gargoyle Enforcers, Liches and Succubi. In order to sacrifice to a monster it has to be unharmed.

Sacrificing may only be done once per 24 hour period. You have to be at least "Great" to be able to sacrifice. The more you sacrifice, the further you advance on your Virtue path. Sacrificing a Lord/Lady title will yield far more progress down the Virtue path than just Great or Glorious status. Also, the more powerful a monster is you sacrifice to, the more you gain. After sacrificing your fame will be dropped to zero.

Rewards

The reward for your sacrifice is the ability to resurrect yourself. For each level you reach on your way, you will be able to resurrect yourself once a week. Thus as Knight of Sacrifice (level 3) you can resurrect yourself 3 times a week.

After resurrecting yourself you will find all your belongings back in your backpack, except for any items that were looted in the time it took you to resurrect.

Spirituality:

Spirituality:
The Virtue Spirituality

The Virtue of Spirituality allows a character to resurrect with more than one hitpoint, as with normal resurrections. The benefits of Spirituality are well worth the effort in gaining the ability, as it helps prevent rez-killings from both players and monsters. It also gets the resurrected person back into the action faster and conserves the mana/bandages/time healing them back up to full hit points.

Gaining Spirituality

Tasks: Players will be able to access a special gump-menu in the virtues menu of Spirituality.

* The menu will ask which Virtue they wish to learn about.
o Eventually all Virtues will be listed, but initially only those Virtues with “systems” that have been introduced into the game will be listed here.
* Once the player selects a Virtue, the player will be given a task based on that Virtue.
o Humility task: Upon visiting the Shrine of Humility, players will be asked to pursue a Humility-based task.
+ Players will be asked to kill an amount of monsters which would normally gain them “Admirable” level of Fame, although no actual fame will be gained for these kills during this task period.
+ Players will be notified when they achieve their task, at which time they will also gain some Spirituality and Humility, as well as be able to continue gaining Fame.
o Sacrifice task: Upon visiting the Shrine of Sacrifice, players will be asked to pursue a Sacrifice-based task.
+ Players will be told to tithe a certain, specific amount of gold at the Shrine of Sacrifice, into a certain chest placed there.
+ If players put in the exact amount of gold requested, they will gain some Spirituality and Sacrifice. If there is not enough gold, the chest will refuse the offering.
o Other tasks: As more Virtues systems become available, other Virtues-based tasks will be added.
* Limitations:
o Characters cannot pursue more than one task per day.
o Characters cannot pursue the same task twice in a row.

Virtuous Title & Abilities: When a character has achieved enough Spirituality points, he is considered to have achieved a certain step on the path of Spirituality.

* When a player moves his cursor over the Spirituality symbol, a title will be displayed, indicating the step currently achieved in Spirituality for that character.
o First step: Seeker of Spirituality
o Second step: Follower of Spirituality
o Third step: Knight of Spirituality
* Players who progress any number of steps on the path of Spirituality, but do not continue to actively pursue it, may discover that this Virtuous title reduces in steps over time.

* Characters who have achieved any steps on the path of Spirituality will recover from being dead faster than other characters, resurrecting with a few more hit points and mana than normal.
o The exact numbers are still to be determined, although it is not likely that they will exceed 50% of the character’s maximum natural stats.
o A player who resurrects through use of his Sacrifice power will not gain these additional, post-resurrection recovery points.
